2015 Tile Flooring Trends
Design that stands the test of time
Flooring trends have a love/hate relationship with tile based on material and color – tile fads pass by quickly and choosing an option with staying power can be tricky. However, one successful style that has withstood the test of time is the pattern of neutral colors. By sticking with creams, golds, grays, light browns and whites, you are ensuring that your floor will match well with other furniture and materials and never easily go out of style.
Tile floors need to stand the test of time, and given how time tends to treat cheaper materials like linoleum and old vinyl, it’s not surprising that modern trends heavily favor stone and ceramic, with an emphasis on stone products. If you have a very specific color scheme to match, then ceramic can help you pinpoint the perfect gloss and shade, but otherwise, take a look at stone options. Not everything is expensive marble – there’s some great work being done with limestone, travertine and granite these days.
Large tiles are the way to go in 2015 and beyond. There are a couple reasons for this trend toward larger tiles – at least a foot across and often larger. Large tiles look more calming, more minimalistic, and more modern – small tiles can work in certain mosaic or pattern situations, but otherwise they tend to clash with walls and bring to mind 70’s-style kitchens. Large tiles are also, thankfully, easier to install.
If you want a really modern tile pattern, consider using concrete. Yes, people can use concrete in the house, and expansive concrete tiles can be very effective in the right space. Of course, the ultra-modern “gray slab” look isn’t for everyone, but concrete tile does come in a variety of other colors and styles to help match your own ideas.
The new age of vinyl
Older vinyl had its problems, yes, but modern vinyl tiles are a different animal. These tiles are better quality, very durable and come in a variety of styles and surfaces that allow them to mimic – at least somewhat – stone and other materials. Plus, they work great in more messy areas like the bathroom or laundry room where spills may be an issue.
